“Oh, it sounds so crazy and new fangled,” the gentleman said to me. “Are you telling me that one of my customers that lives right here in Knoxville would come to a website about my store when I’m right down the road?” I gave him a sheepish grin and said, “Absolutely.” He knew I was going to say that; he was just stalling like many people do when they know something big is right on top of them, but they can’t quite get their mind around it. “But, the key is, you have to make it easy for him to find it. It has to meet a need he has and be easy to use. It just being out there isn’t enough.”
The conversation continued for a while until that mental wall he had put up started to crumble … and he began to sincerely listen. “Let me show you how a little knowledge about the web and a little ingenuity can give you an additional way to grow your customer base.”
“But, I don’t get it!”
I’ve had a conversation like this with more people than I could count. Some came ’saw the light’ and others did not. Some ‘got it’ at a later date, and either called me, or someone else, to work with them. What’s the point? Whether you ‘get’ the Internet or not is irrelevant. You knowing how to capitalize on a website or not doesn’t change the fact that the Internet is changing the face of business. Yes, even small business. Every day, and all over the world.
Juicy tidbits about local business websites
- They can bring in new, local customers
- They can help you serve your existing customers better
- They can increase your sales
- They can help you communicate about your company (organization, mission, services) with the community
The 5 website lies
- I don’t know anything about building a website, so I can’t use one for my business
- Everyone will know my website is there by way of the mystical “Internet magic”
- My website will take too much time to maintain
- Building a website will break the bank (or at least drain my account)
- If I hire someone who knows a lot about ‘web stuff’ my website will succeed
- “Yes, you have to do it this way.”
